PRESS RELEASE
Measuring diffraction efficiency and scattered light for some gratings, especially for some new samples, is a very important and challenging task. Gratings efficiencies can be accurately calculated for a broad range of wavelengths and other parameters based on the measured groove profile and tabulated refractive indices data. However, real grating parameters are usually measured in such a manner that they are not to be intended for further precise modeling. On the other hand, the existing exact theories and appropriate software use some ideal models for parameters without consideration of measuring inaccuracy and are sophisticated, as a rule.
The NASA GSFC Optics Branch has a Diffraction Grating Evaluation Facility (DGEF). This is a world-class, advanced resource that was developed at Goddard to evaluate optical components such as diffraction gratings, mirrors, and filters as well as detection systems used in space instrumentation. The NRL Space Science Division UV and X-Ray Spectroscopy Section provides an ultrahigh vacuum facility for the development and calibration of extreme ultraviolet (EUV) and x-ray optics and instrumentation using monochromatic synchrotron radiation. The Richardson Gratings is a world leader in the design and manufacture of ruled and holographic diffraction gratings for the industrial, academic and scientific markets.
International Intellectual Group, Inc. (I.I.G., Inc.) has 15 years of experience in developing exact and approximate methods of calculating gratings efficiency and 10 years of experience in creating and selling various commercial programs based on exact theories. I.I.G. members have considerable experience in gratings manufacture and both measuring and comparing theory with experiments from soft X-ray to far IR. Moreover, today we are using the most general integral theory, which is able to deal with practically any kind of grating, including some limiting cases, where it is the only available method.
The main goal in creating the Efficiency Testing Laboratory is to clear up a gap between theory and experiment for all types of gratings, as well as to give researchers better tools and methods for increasing performance of the next generation of gratings and instruments. The objectives of the mutual collaboration should be:
– To achieve coincidence of measured and accurately calculated curves for various gratings and wavelengths.
– To work out recommendations for using real gratings parameters and methods of precisely modeling their diffraction properties.
– To issue gratings efficiency certificates for some important cases comprising the computed and measured efficiency curves.
As a result of our investigation, the Researcher would know that the theoretical energy limit is attained for a real grating in the whole working range. The results of calculations, along with experimental data and methods and programs used covering efficiency certified gratings, should be properly advertised in scientific magazines and the internet.
